Sacraments

Infant Baptism (Birth to 6 years)

We are happy to welcome your child into our Catholic Christian faith community as a baptized child of God.

In order to assist you in your desire to have your child baptized into the Catholic Church, click on the “Guidelines” button to learn more. Complete the Baptism Intake Form and bring/mail to our office.

Child Baptism (7-17 Years of age)

Age 7 and older is considered the age of reason when a child can understand the Sacrament of Baptism and actively participate. The Baptism process begins the same as for infants, however, children of this age need to be registered in Holy Spirit Faith Formation. To register for Faith Formation please contact the Faith Formation Office directly at (510) 456-4974 or click the button below for more information.

Adult Baptism (18+ Years of age)

Adults seeking baptism and the other Sacraments of Initiation are introduced into the Roman Catholic faith through the Rite of Christian Intitiation of Adults (RCIA). Programs run from fall through spring meeting weekly and culminate with reception into the Church during the Easter Vigil Celebration.

Reconciliation

Also Known as Confession or Penance

Experience God’s forgiveness firsthand through the Sacrament of Penance. See our Confession schedule here. Private confessions available by appointment by calling 510-797-1660.

First Holy Communion

The most venerable sacrament is the blessed Eucharist, in which Christ the Lord himself is contained, offered and received, and by which the Church continually lives and grows. The eucharistic Sacrifice, the memorial of the death and resurrection of the Lord, in which the Sacrifice of the cross is forever perpetuated, is the summit and source of all worship and christian life. By means of it the unity of God’s people is signified and brought about, and the building up of the body of Christ is perfected. The other sacraments and all the apostolic works of Christ are bound up with, and directed to, the blessed Eucharist. – www.oakdiocese.org, FAQ about First Communion

Children age 7-17

Children prepare for receiving First Holy Communion in a two year program starting in the 1st grade and culminating in the spring of 2nd grade with the celebration of First Holy Communion. Children beginning after 1st grade will need to contact the Faith Formation office to register for an appropriate program.

Adults age 18+

Adults wanting to receive First Holy Communion do so through RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). To register or learn more, follow the link below.

Confirmation

In the Sacrament of Confirmation the baptized person is “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit” and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Often Confirmation is depicted as baptism with fire. The Sacrament includes the laying on of hands and the anointing with the holy oil, Chrism.

Youth (Grades 9-12)

Classes run September through May on Sunday afternoons before the 5 pm Mass.

Adults age 18+

Confirmation preparation is offered through our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program. Program content and length varies depending on your spiritual formation.

Matrimony

The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which is more than a contract. The marriage covenant refers to the relationship between husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God.

Getting Started

The first step in reserving a date and planning your marriage is to call the clergy directly and schedule an appointment.

You may call the rectory office at 510-797-1660 to speak with a priest.

Sometimes parishioners may have a family member or close friend who is clergy whom they wish to preside at their marriage. In these cases you still need to contact our parish clergy as your first step.

Group Convalidation

Bring your marriage into the Church.

Catholic Church law requires baptized Catholics to marry before a Catholic priest or deacon. In Catholic tradition, the vows exchanged by the couple are a sacred pact between each other with Christ as their partner. Studies have shown that couples who recognize God’s presence in their relationships experience greater contentment and are more likely to have a lifelong marriage. Couples who bring their marriage into the Church welcome God’s grace and special blessings upon their marriage.

If your vows were exchanged in the presence of ministers from other religious traditions or civil officials, we invite you to bring new meaning to your relationship by embracing the vocation of marriage.

This group convalidation is for couples married outside the Catholic Church and if this is the only marriage for both persons.

Group convalidations take place in September each year. Please complete the registration form – click on the button below.

Contact Josephine at 510.797.1660 for more information. You may also send an email to [email protected] and one of our team members will provide you with more details.

Anointing of the Sick

This sacrament is encouraged for older people; there is no need to wait until one is dying.

Holy Spirit Church offers a monthly Anointing Mass on the first Saturday of the month at 12:00 pm with the exception of January and when Holy Week falls on the first Saturday. All seniors, those seriously ill, or those anticipating surgery are invited to attend the Anointing Mass and join us for a complimentary lunch following the Mass.

Otherwise, if you are a parishioner seeking the Rite of Anointing, please call the parish office at 510-797-1660.
If you are in one of our local hospitals (Washington or Kaiser) please let the floor nurse know of your need as procedures are in place to notify the closest priest possible for your sacramental needs.

For those who are about to depart from this life, we encourage them to seek the Sacraments of Confession, Anointing of the Sick, and Eucharist (this is known as Viaticum, provision for the journey).

Funerals

Whether you’re interested in preplanning your own funeral or making plans for a loved one, you’ll want to look at our faith traditions.

In brief the funeral can have three basic elements:

  1. Vigil
  2. Funeral Mass/Memorial Mass
  3. Rite of Committal

There are local funeral homes which can be your singular stop for making plans, however you may want to reference Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services (CFCS) as your guide through the decision making process.
