Infant Baptisms (Birth to 6 years)
Infant baptisms take place at 1:45 on Sundays and as many as 6 infants can be baptized on each Sunday. To start the process parents need to call the church office at 510-797-1660 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. M-F to schedule a brief parent interview or email here. Parents need to be registered parishioners of Holy Spirit Church.
Interviews take place on Wednesdays between 9:30-11:00 a.m. running every 20 minutes. Only one parent needs to attend the meeting. (Both are welcome!) At this interview parent(s) need to bring 4 things:
1. A copy of their babies' birth certificate or birth document which the hospital issued
2. Godparent names (Who can be a Godparent?)
3. The church stipend/offering
4. Letter of Permission from Godparents pastor (if Godparent is out of Holy Spirit parish)
During the meeting parents will select a date for their child's baptism and receive answers to any questions they may have. Additionally there is a baptismal prep class that Godparents (if Godparent is a Holy Spirit parishioner) and parents are required to attend. This prep class takes place on Mondays from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the De Sousa House 4 Plex.
Child Baptisms (7 to 15 years of age)
Age 7 and older is considered the age of reason when a child can understand the Sacrament of Baptism and actively participate. The Baptism process begins the same as for infants, however, children of this age need to be registered in Holy Spirit Faith Formation. To register for Faith Formation please contact the Faith Formation Office directly at 510-456-4974 or online here
Adult Baptisms (16+ years of age)
Adults seeking the sacraments are introduced into the Roman Catholic faith through the Rite of Christian Intitiation of Adults (RCIA). Programs run from fall through spring meeting weekly and culminating with reception into the church during Easter Vigil. Shorter programs are available for Catholics who have already received Baptism, First Holy Communion and Reconciliation and only need Confirmation to complete their Sacraments of Initiation. Please contact RCIA in the Holy Spirit Faith Formation office at 510-456-4974 or email here, or online here
